Mike Hamill founded Grim Notion Studios with the goal of spreading the love and opportunity for visual storytelling beyond the bounds of the few major cities where it’s been centralized for decades. Bringing over 15 years of experience from across the video media spectrum, the intention is to use the ever-expanding capabilities of remote collaboration technology to discover and help bring thoughtful and compelling creations from unexpected pockets of the world to life.
Over the course of his career, Mike has worked on feature films, both scripted and unscripted television series, documentaries, music videos, commercial content and more. He’s worked in development at Lionsgate, written, produced and directed various independent projects, and provided post-production editing and color services for both small and large companies, like Sony Pictures Television. There is no stage of a production, from concept to finalization, with which he doesn’t have an intimate understanding and noteworthy skill set. Every creative endeavor has its own unique challenges to navigate and overcome, and this well-rounded background provides greater insight into exploring the best solutions.
While working in development, he’s had a hand in everything from treatments to scripts, to notes, to rewrites and compiling production bibles. In production, he’s worked with amazing actors and performers, directing and shooting award-winning content with talented teams of collaborators, and had fun dabbling in the art department to create various pieces to enhance production design. When it comes to post-production, where matters like software familiarity come most into play, he’s spent years in Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve Studio as his preferred environment for cutting, grading and finalizing, but he’s not limited to a single software, also being experienced with the Adobe suite, Final Cut, Avid and others. He’s a proficient colorist and editor, and adept in the related categories of keying, rotoscoping, compositing visual effects and more.
